Great Adventure, New Jersey- Old Haunted House which caught fire and took 8 teenager's lives in May 1985. Ironically it was my first or second day working at the park. I was assigned job as clerk in gift store. Shortly into my shift I was inexplicably pulled out of shop to stand watch and divert visitors from an area engulfed in smoke and flames. It was a horrible assignment for which my 18 yrs. on earth had not yet prepare me. I eventually heard it was a fire at the haunted house. I recall thinking it seemed like a bad fire and questioning why the park was not closing. My shift ended yet no supervisors were anywhere to be seen. I just stood there doing as assigned either out of sense of duty, concern or interest, until I finally decided I should just clock out and go home. I left with little knowledge of just how bad a tragedy I was blocking people from. News was slow in those days (1985) the fire was reported at 11pm but no details of missing youths or extent of tragedy was included. I returned to work the next day as scheduled for opening shift. The park offices shared the same area as the employee building and park entrance. As I exited the building to enter park I witnessed dozens of people (who were obviously not employees) running around desperately screaming. One of them approached me explaining that they were all parents and families of teens who never returned home from park the prior evening She begged me for help crying that park management would give them no details or access to emergency officials and that they were told the only way they could get into park was to buy a ticket and wait for park to open. It was one of the most inhumane events I ever experienced. I stood there, jaw hanging, watching the crowd and tensions grow. No management was in sight. Disgusted I headed for locker room, changed, handed in uniform, and never returned to work again. Doorway To Hell?? The Mysteries and Controversies Surrounding the deadly Haunted Castle fire at Six Flags Great Adventure eBook Peter James Smith Reviews
This is an excellently researched and detailed book--the only book or source of this information of which I am aware. This book details the true story and the aftermath of a fire in a Haunted Castle attraction that killed 8 teenagers in New Jersey. The event was sparsely and often erroneously reported in newspapers (I remember an article from that time saying the fire was started by teenagers smoking marijuana--not true.) The book starts with a brief history of the Six Flags Great Adventure Park and the Doorway to Hell attraction, which was later moved to Great Adventure. The author discusses the true events surrounding the fire, and the cover-up of those events afterwards. The author also shows the evidence that at least a couple of articles pointing out that an exit door was chained shut has since been edited out of archived copies of the newspaper. The author also shows the evidence that the fire was caused by arson, and that even though the probably arsonist was questioned by police, he was never charged with any crime or asked to testify at the trial against Six Flags. The author also obtains an exclusive interview from Suzette, the sole survivor of the fire, who explains the last few minutes inside the Haunted Castle, and why she was able to escape when the other victims did not. Most intriguing was Suzette's story of being rescued, apparently by a guardian angel, even though a Six Flags employee later took credit for this rescue (his story of running into a smoke filled burning building which had been evacuated and was believed to be empty of people is quite improbable, not to mention Suzette says he was not the man who rescued her.) Many other fascinated details showing how the "perfect storm", the ignoring of warning signs and safety measures, came together to created this tragedy are described in this book.
The author was inspired to do this book, based on a false fire alarm that happened when he was inside the Haunted Castle, only a week before the fire that killed eight. The author wisely points out in the prologue that such incidents as the deadly fire at the Haunted Castle effect many people, because people realize that it could just as easily been themselves caught up in the fire. I felt the same way when I originally heard about the fire back in 1984 (I was a teenager myself, and had been through the original Doorway to Hell/Haunted Castle which had been moved to Six Flags St. Louis when the far larger Haunted Castle was built at Six Flags Great Adventure.)
When I had went through the Haunted Castle at Six Flags St. Louis, I had naively assumed it was the safest attraction in the park, because it had no moving parts. This books points out the importance of fire codes and minimal safety standards.
The points others have made about the horrendous editing of this book is true. The book is horribly edited with obvious typos (for example, my edition went from Chapter 1 to Chapter 3, an obvious numbering error. For whatever reason, the author has decided not to correct these typos. Even so, it is still easy to understand what the author is saying, and the important topic covered, as well as the fact that this topic is not covered anywhere else, makes this book a 5-star read in spite of the editing.
I worked at Great Adventure many, many years ago. I knew about the fire, I was living in Toms River, NJ on the night it happened and was supposed to go the the park that night for the concert but my parents wouldn't let me go without my older brother and he wasn't interested . . . .
Details were sketchy then and the fire was never spoken about during the time I worked there. I remember during my orientation for the job, I asked why they didn't acknowledge the location of the fire and was told "it was in the past and the park has moved forward". I do remember, at one time, seeing a really small memorial plaque at the site but it didn't last very long.
I learned a lot by reading the book, details I personally was curious about. Whether it is true or is artistic license, I found the story to be fascinating in a morbid, train wreck kind of way.
There are indeed a few side stories such as the infamous Marshall murder that are woven into the main story. Having grown up in Toms River and gone to school with the youngest son of the Marshall family, I didn't mind the reference being added to the book. Maybe it's a locals Jersey thing but I understood how all the side stories tied in to the bigger story of the Great Adventure fire.
It was and still is a horrid tragedy. This is the only book/ebook that I've read or even heard of that has given such attention to the events of that night.
I think the author did an excellent job with the way he told the story. I like his writing style. I have also sent this ebook to others back in NJ because I did like it that much to want to share it.
Mr. Smith, what is your opinion on Stillwalk Manor in Seaside Heights now being gone also? A shame that Superstorm Sandy took it off the end of Casino Pier. If you ever write about Sandy and the changes that occurred to all of the icons we grew up with, I'd be interested in reading that also.
In closing, may the victims of the Great Adventure fire rest in peace.
